Talented ‘Cats

Call this a potpourri of fantastic news!

Last week we celebrated our US Army – NFL Hall of Fame Award of Excellence nominee: senior Makenzie Funk. As the first student EVER from the state of Washington, Makenzie was honored at an assembly that was held in the MSHS Theatre. NFL Hall of Fame player Mike Haynes honored Makenzie with her award, and we are all incredibly proud of this strong student/athlete. Truly, she is deserving as only one of 25 national finalists!

Following this assembly, I was honored to celebrate two more student/athletes at the annual GSL Scholar-Athlete Luncheon. This year Megan Billeter and Hayden Dressel were our nominees, and this award luncheon at the Spokane Club was the perfect setting to honor their four year careers. Joined by nominees from the nine other GSL schools, honoring the golf, volleyball, distance running and academic accomplishments of both Megan and Hayden was a pleasure.

Fast forward to this week where, last night, we celebrated our 2017 Spokane Scholars. For the past 25 years, the Spokane Scholars board has honored the most notable scholars from schools in Spokane County. This year we were pleased to nominate Taylor Bastian (English), Joey Roach (Social Studies), Makenzie Funk (Science), Andrew Bailey (Math), Lindsey Carlson (World Languages) and Tannor Glumbik (Fine Arts). Congratulations to these incredible scholars. . . we are proud of your dedication and hard work!

Our “Why” statement at Mt. Spokane High School reads as follows: Empowering People – Abolishing Apathy – Creating What’s Next. Each of these events, highlighted by our talented students, fulfills the intent of our statement perfectly. What an amazing group of students!
